”Commemorating The Ordinary,” 2017.
I am captivated by the materiality of photography.
Imagery such as portraiture is historically integrated in wearable objects — lockets, bracelets, rings, pins, etc. — and the purpose is usually for remembrance. Their small, intimate, wearable, and intentional nature places value on the portraits. While lockets are items intended for private viewing of the photos in which they contain, by contrast, pins and brooches are ornamental objects for being viewed publicly. In a way, the intention of pins is also to commemorate something. I wonder, what if the subjects of the photos integrated in wearable objects were unconventional? Further, what if the subject’s value was put into question?
With these questions in mind, as wearable pins, this project intends to commemorate or display ordinary subjects which are often overlooked and remembered only when their use is needed. The chosen subjects depicted serve as functional everyday objects. One might say there is nothing necessarily special about each one, but another might say tools such as these are one element in a process which serves a greater purpose.
